The First Motorcycle made was by a American , by the name of Sylvester Howard Roper of Roxbury, Massachusetts ( 1823 - 1896 ) invented a two - cylinder steamengine motorcycle,
( powered by coal ) in 1867 this can be considered the first motorcycle if you allow your description of a motorcycle to include a steam engine.

A German man, Gottlieb Daimler invented the first gas - engined motorcycle in 1885 which was attached to a wooden bike one wheel in the front and one in the back, although it had a smeller spring - loaded outrigger wheel on each side. wheels being of the iron - banded wooden-spoked wagon-type, definitely a "bone-crusher" chassis.

Nicolaus August Otto invented the first " four - stroke internal - combustion engine" in 1876. As soon as he completed his engine, Daimler ( a former otto employee ) built it into a motorcycle. Harley and the Davidson developed motorcycles and their business competitors such as Excelsior, Indian, Pierce, Merkel, Schickel and Thor. In 1903, William Harley and his friends Arthur and Welter Davidson launched the Harley - Davidson motor company. Planned to manufacture it as a transport vehicle. Merchant, C.H. Lange, sold the first officially distributed Harley - Davidson in Chicago.

  Excelsior Henderson "Excelsiors" first motorcycle was a single-speed machine, featuring a single-cylinder, 21c.i. "F-Head" which the intake valve was on top of the cylinder and the exhaust valve was inverted inside the cylinder. Riders could speed along at 35 to40 MPH.

  Indian 1901-1953  the original motorcycle company was founded in 1901 in Springfield Massachusetts by bicycle racer George Hendee and swedish immigrant Oscar Hedstrom the earliest models looked like mopeds only 3 weremade in 1901. Indian made 143 motorcycles in 1902.

Merkel USA, 1901-1910 Joseph Merkel built motorcycles and motor wheel attachments.

Triumph motorcycles was founded by two Germans named Siegfried Bettman and Muaritz Shulte. Siegfried changed his old company name to Triumph, and the company was born in 1902.

Pierce USA, 1909-1910, George Pierce. owner of the Pierce Arrow Automobile company, and the pierce bicycle company, started the pierce four company in 1909 a cylinder model was added in 1910.

Schickel USA, 1907-1924 Schickel motor company. Stamford Connecticut 1912-1915.

Thor the Aurora automatic machine co. built engines, to the design of Oscar Hedstrom, for the first Indians. It also sold these engines to other motorcycle builders using the Thor brand-name, reading-standard, racycle, emblem, brandenburg, yankee and others used thor engines or assembled complete thor bikes and rebadged them.the first complete thor motorcycles were built in 1907 and stopped in 1916.
